Challenges of Deaf refugees in the USA

Presenter:  Helen Derebe

 

Description of the Presentation:

The presenter, Helen Derebe, will talk about the challenges she faced as a refugee coming to the United States. She will explain the consequences of arriving in the U.S. without any family/community support. She experienced trauma due to a lack of communication access as well as trauma dealing with racism and discrimination.  Some of the topics she will address include: communication challenges, cultural shock, and medical concerns.

Presenter’s Bio:

Helen Derebe was born in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. She moved to the U.S. in 2009.  She studied liberal arts in college. Her future goal is to be an elementary school teacher and writer.
